With the increase in flying fox populations locally - worrying about Hendra virus is a natural progression.
The closest documented case was in Scone in 2019. But bat populations have increased more locally since.
Be aware of the paddocks your horses are in and potential proximity to any micro or large colonies. This is critical to reducing risk.
Please consider vaccination for your horses. Itās expensive, but invaluable.
Hendra virus is zoonotic (transmittable to humans) and is rare but often lethal. Unfortunately there is no vaccine for people.
